The Last Day of School Hits Different (And So Does the First Day of Summer)

  • May 19
  • 2 min read

There’s just something about the last day of school as a millennial mom…

The backpacks get dropped.

The lunchboxes get tossed.

The alarms get turned off.

And for a brief, beautiful moment…

We think:“This is it. This is going to be the best summer ever.” 😅

And then…

Reality hits somewhere around 10:42am on Day 1.

The house is loud.

The snacks are already gone.

Someone is bored.

Someone is fighting.

Someone is asking what’s for lunch… while you’re still cleaning up breakfast.

Welcome to summer, moms 😂

🎉 The Emotional Whiplash of It All

We spend ALL of May in survival mode:

  • spirit days

  • teacher gifts

  • end-of-year parties

  • awards ceremonies

  • 47 emails we had to “just send real quick”

And then suddenly…

Nothing.

No schedule.

No structure.

No quiet mornings.

Just… kids. All day. Every day. 😅

☀️ KO’s DO’S OF SUMMER (Real Life Edition)

✔️ DO lower the bar

This is not the summer of Pinterest perfection.

This is:

  • popsicles for lunch

  • swimsuits as outfits

  • screen time so you can think straight.

And that’s okay.

✔️ DO create just enough structure

Not a schedule…A loose vibe 😂

Think:

  • morning routine

  • outside time

  • quiet time (FOR YOUR SANITY)

You don’t need a full plan—just a rhythm.

✔️ DO say yes more

Yes to:

  • messy days

  • spontaneous ice cream runs

  • late bedtimes every now and then

These are the memories they’ll remember 🤍

✔️ DO protect your peace

You do NOT have to:

  • attend every playdate

  • host everything

  • entertain 24/7

It’s okay to say:“Not today.”

✔️ DO take care of YOU

You are not just the cruise director of summer.

You’re still:

  • a human

  • a woman

  • someone who deserves quiet and space

Even if that looks like:locking yourself in the bathroom for 5 minutes 😅

🚫 KO’s DON’TS OF SUMMER

❌ DON’T try to be everything

You don’t have to be:

  • camp counselor

  • chef

  • entertainer

  • activity planner

Every. Single. Day.

❌ DON’T compare your summer to social media

Some moms are posting:

  • color-coded activities

  • daily crafts

  • themed weeks

Meanwhile, you’re just trying to keep everyone alive and fed.

You’re doing it right.

❌ DON’T overschedule

Summer doesn’t need to feel like the school year 2.0.

Leave space for:

  • boredom

  • creativity

  • slow mornings

❌ DON’T forget… this goes FAST

Even on the hard days.

Even on the loud days.

Even on the “I cannot hear mom one more time” days 😅

This season? It’s fleeting.

🤍 The Truth About Summer as a Millennial Mom

It’s chaotic.

It’s loud.

It's messy.

But it’s also:

  • barefoot kids running through the yard

  • late night giggles

  • popsicle-stained smiles

  • memories you don’t realize you’re making in real time

✨ KO TRUTH TALK

You don’t need a perfect summer.

You just need a present one.

So take the picture.

Eat the ice cream.

Let the house get a little messy.

And remind yourself…

You’re not just surviving summer.

You’re living it 🤍
