The Family Vacation Moms Deserve Too

The photos tell one story.
The mom tells another.
In the pictures, everyone is smiling.
The kids are happy.
The sunsets are beautiful.
The memories are being made.
It looks effortless.
But every mom knows what happened before that photo was taken.
The packing lists.
The sunscreen.
The snacks.
The chargers.
The swimsuits.
The forgotten toothbrushes.
The emergency medications.
The water bottles.
The extra outfits.
The backup outfits for the extra outfits.
And somehow...
Mom is expected to remember it all.
Family vacations are funny that way.
Everyone gets excited about the trip.
But moms often become the travel agent, event planner, packing coordinator, personal assistant, and memory keeper before the vacation even begins.
The vacation starts long before the car pulls out of the driveway.
It starts with the mental checklist running through our heads at 2 a.m.
Did I pack enough underwear?
Did I book the reservation?
Did I remember the charger?
Do we have enough snacks?
Did anyone feed the dog?
Did I remember my own toothbrush?
The answer to that last one is usually no. 😅
And yet...
We keep doing it.
Because we love our families.
Because we love creating memories.
Because seeing our kids experience something new makes every bit of effort worth it.
But can we talk about something for a second?
Moms deserve to enjoy the vacation too.
Not just manage it.
Enjoy it.
Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that our role on vacation was to make sure everyone else was having a good time.
The kids.
Our spouse.
The grandparents.
Everyone.
Meanwhile, mom is carrying the cooler, checking the weather, counting heads, and mentally calculating how long it's been since someone last ate.
That's not a vacation.
That's project management with a better view.
This summer, what if we did things a little differently?
What if we still packed the snacks...
but also sat in the beach chair?
What if we still made the plans...
but also took the nap?
What if we still carried the load...
but not all of it?
What if we let someone else remember the towels for once?
What if we asked for help instead of silently carrying everything ourselves?
Because here's the truth:
Your family doesn't need a perfect vacation.
They don't need every detail perfectly executed.
They don't need a stressed-out mom trying to create Pinterest-worthy memories.
They need you.
Present.
Laughing.
Making memories alongside them.
The kids won't remember whether you packed the perfect snacks.
They'll remember chasing waves.
Late-night ice cream.
The card games.
The laughter.
The moments you were actually in.
Not managing.
Living.
So if you're heading into vacation season carrying the mental load of an entire family...
Here's your reminder:
Pack the bags.
Make the plans.
Bring the sunscreen.
But don't forget to bring yourself too.
Because moms deserve memories from the vacation...
not just responsibilities.
And maybe the best souvenir you can bring home this summer isn't a t-shirt or a magnet.
Maybe it's the memory of actually enjoying the trip too. 🤍
