Back to School… and Back to Me (Sort Of) By KO Unscripted
Let’s talk about what it really takes to make Back to School happen.
It’s not just backpacks and lunchboxes. It’s not just school supplies, color-coded calendars, and making sure everyone has the exact shade of blue folder their teacher requested.
It’s us—the moms—quietly working overtime behind the scenes to make the magic happen. From tracking down pencil pouches at three different stores, to reworking bedtime routines, to ironing spirit shirts at midnight… we do it all so they feel ready. Grounded. Safe.
And then, one random Friday morning in August… they go.
☕ And Just Like That… The House is Quiet
And you think—finally, some time to just be me again. Not the snack-getter, referee, or chauffeur. Just… me.
And it’s beautiful.
I sit with a hot coffee (that I didn’t have to microwave three times). I hear myself think again. I even remember what silence feels like.
But then… I check the clock. I peek at the lunch menu. I wonder if they’re okay.
Because even though I crave these quiet hours, my heart still longs to be where they are.
🚌 The Real Back-to-School Shift
The truth is, back to school isn't just a transition for the kids—it's a shift for us, too.
We’re learning (again) how to let go a little. We’re adjusting to a quieter house, a different rhythm, and figuring out where we fit now that we’re not needed every second.
And in that space, something powerful happens: We start to rediscover ourselves. We remember our passions. We reconnect with friends. We breathe.
But we also want to stay close. We want to show up at their school. To volunteer for the class party. To pop into the lunchroom. To be a present, visible part of their world—even while we’re rebuilding our own.
Because this season is sweet. And short. And we don’t want to miss it.
💛 To All the Moms Making It Happen…
If no one’s told you lately: You’re the engine behind it all. The glue. The calendar. The keeper of the Target receipts. You make the start of the school year feel like magic—even when you’re running on caffeine and prayers.
So take the quiet moments and enjoy them. But also trust your instinct when it pulls you back toward where your babies are. There’s space for both: You the Woman. You the Mom.
Back to school isn’t about letting go—it’s about growing alongside them.
And that? You’re doing beautifully.
xo,
K (and a quiet cheer from O too)
